Shoes in Ireland

We are going to Ireland in a few weeks. Should I take my sandals?

How many is "a few weeks"? It doesn't get as hot there, generally, as it does here. I always take a good pair of walking shoes/athletic shoes. (I haven't needed anything dressier on my trips.) If you are thinking you need sandals as dressier shoes, at least they don't take up much room.

We arrive June 18. I don't want wet feet, but I HATE hot feet! :)

Well, you always have to plan for wet feet. You're more likely to be cold/damp/wet than hot in June.

As Nancy said, they're small and won't take up a lot of room. I always check the Weather Channel website just before I go so I can get the forecast for where I'm going, so that'll give you an idea if you'll need them.

Waterproof is usually a good idea in Ireland. Even if the weather is nice, you don't want to be seperated from your rain shell because you're going to get some rain. If your sandals can't stand getting wet, don't pack them.

Comfortable and waterproof for Ireland. If you don't want wet feet don't take sandals!

Just make sure they are comfortable walking long distances. You should be more concerned with your feet hurting than with them getting hot. And I agree- most likely they will get wet! I sprayed waterproof on all my shoes before going to Ireland.

I spent 5 weeks in Ireland, from the second week in May to the third week in June, a few years ago. Solid rain for the first 2-1/2 weeks, then scattered rain off and on til I left. Even I, who don't mind "soft" rain, got tired of it. But that's what makes it the Emerald Isle--just roll with the punches. As others have said, take a pair of sandals just in case (good to use in the shower too) and a pair of waterproof shoes (black goes with everything) with decent traction that you can use for walking on less than perfectly manicured surfaces. I love my Keens for that purpose.

I really don't think you will get a lot of use from them. I have spent most of my summers in the west part of Ireland since I was 5. It is typically really nice in August. If you have a light pair you could bring those along but it is so DAMP in Ireland, especially outside of the big cities. The other thing to remember, is Ireland has wonderful shoe shops and you could treat yourself to a yummy pair of Clarks! If you do bring a pair of sandles, make sure you bring a pair of shoes to keep in the car if you decided to stop along the way and don't want to get your feet wet if you are walking in a field or for when it does rain. Have a GREAT time!

I just returned from two weeks in Ireland and was very happy with my Keens. They worked well in the wet weather and any uneven spots I encountered.
