My daughter and I will be going to Ireland next month. With the near certainty of rain, she's wondering what kind of shoes to wear. I thought the experts here would be the ones to ask. Thanks in advance.
The best ones I've used are my suede Merrills that I sprayed to waterproof 'em.
Assuming that you won't be doing any "serious" hiking in the rain, how about a nice pair of Crocs. They are very light weight and can be carried in her backpack in the event of unexpected rain. Thats what I bought for my trip there in July. If you look in the Travel Smith catelog you may find some other options. Don't know your daughter's age, but would recommend that she leave her fashion shoes at home and go 100% sensible Rain or Shine. Have fun.
I love my Columbia hiking shoes! They are comfortable even in hot weather because they breathe, but they also keep my feet completely dry in wet weather. I've actually even waded through the occasional creek and gotten them completely soaked and they dry quickly. They have been all over the world with me.
Keen's Newport or Venice sandals - made to get wet, dry quickly, have good arch support and can be worn with or without socks. I got some crazy striped Smartwools to wear with mine.
No matter what you choose be sure to hit them with some silicon spray. It will make a difference. Also, take an alternate pair to save your feet. Even if you just wear them in the evening to the pub your feet will thank you. I wear Finn Comfort's in Scotland. ; ) Pam
