Sherwood Forest

Going to London this May and debating taking a day trip to Sherwood Forest. I'm looking for helping trying to figure which train(s) and buses I need to get there.

Check out VisitNottingham.com Trains to Nottingham leave from London's St Pancras station. Looks like it takes about two hours. That's a doable daytrip, if you can get from Nottingham to the forest in good time. Haven't been there, but I suspect Nottingham is worth spending some time in, too.

Thank you for that information
I think it will help my group of merry men figure out what they want to do

Stayed in Nottingham for a week several years ago in a canal boat. Had a great time. Went to Ye Olde Jerusalem pub, carved out of the hill side and preported to be the oldest pub in UK. Also did the castle tour - it is ok. Went to the lace museum, liked it. Went to Sherwood Forest. Ok. Kids liked it.

You do realize that there is no forest there, right, at least not much? Most British forests became navy ships hundreds of years ago.

"The park hosts the annual Robin Hood Festival for a week each summer. This event recreates a medieval atmosphere and features the major characters from the Robin Hood legend. The week's entertainment includes jousters and strolling players, dressed in medieval attire, in addition to a medieval encampment complete with jesters, musicians, rat-catchers, alchemists and fire eaters." That's from the Wikipedia article on Sherwood Forest. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherwood_Forest I would like to go there myself sometime when they are having this festival. August 10th to August 14th is this year's date for the festival. Here's a website: http://www.robinhood.org.uk/rhf.htm You may like to go to this on another trip over there sometime. Too bad it is not going to be going on when you're there this time. I thought I'd mention it in case you keep a file, as some of us do, of "Things to Do Next Trip".

I have been to Nottingham a few times and found it to be delightful. Also went to the pub and lace factory as mentioned above. I think the idea of Sherwood Forest is worth the trip whether or not you will see a huge forest and the Robin Hood gang... sometimes its just the idea of it. I also went ot Robin Hoods Bay which was fun, and I think the town of Whitby is in the bay, or near it, and it was a great seaside town. Have a great time. I love that part of England.

Nigel, I take your point about forests. But, there are trees in England. I've seen them. They're in big flower pots.

Terry k, I love Robin Hoods Bay too! And Whitby. Quite a little distance from Nottingham and Sherwood Forest but I can see why your mind took you there. I also liked Nottingham. The castle, the lace factory and the huge tree that is prolly all that is left of "the Forest". Well worth a visit and a place to play "lets pretend".

Laurel...yes Whitby is great and a bit of a drive...don't remember exactly, but the whole Robin Hood thing... Also, its funny that when I think about it,I guess there aren't a lot of forests in England, but I happen to be a photographer and have an art print titled ' England- the Forest' ( taken just outside of Stratford upon Avon) and
another one near Sandringham called 'The Queens Forest'... guess I must be drawn to them....but never did run into Robin Hood

Little John is supposed to be buried in the churchyard of Hathersage Church in Derbyshire. There is a marked grave site. Pleasant contryside to drive through. It is also on a railway line (from Sheffield?)
