For summer 2008 I am planning two weeks in Ireland via a rental car & generally following RS suggestions. Is there any particular advantage/disadvantage arriving/departing from
Shannon vs Dublin airport?

Shannon is much simpler to get in and out of. If you start in Dublin, you may want to hold off on your car rental until you get ready to leave the city. Dublin is easy to get around in on foot, bus, or taxi, but horrible to drive in, especially if you aren't used to driving on the left. Just getting from Dooley's car rental to our guesthouse and out of the city was a lengthy, nervewracking adventure.

Shannon is definitely the easier airport to arrive and depart from. If you are unaccustomed to driving on the other side of the road, you'll have an easier time adjusting at Shannon because you are out in the country. The Dublin airport is on a very busy main street, and traffic can be brutal. And I agree that you have no need for a rental car IN Dublin. If you plan to fly into Shannon and out of Dublin, I would suggest dropping off your rental car before traveling into the city center.
