Shakespeare Performances in Stratford-upon-Avon

We will be in the Cotswolds 20-24 Sep and according to the website for the Royal Shakepeare Company, http://www.rsc.org.uk/, it appears that there will be no performances during this time. Correct? Are the tours there worthwhile? And would a production at the Globe in London be our next best option? Thanks!

We love Stratford. But we haven't gone into any of the Shakespeare buildings- just too espensive for us as we aren't Shakespeare buffs. I love to look in at the gardens attached to some of the places, though. Stratford is a lovely town with beautiful walks along the Avon and some great old churches. There is also a butterfly "preserve" that is fun. Check the Globe's website and "What's On in London" for other Shakespeare performances as there are often several at various locations. Where else are you going? There are sometimes performances in Edinburgh, York, Cardiff, Bath, etc.

I can't see anything on in Stratford for those dates either. I've never done tours there so can't comment. We spent a weekend there last year and found it easy enough to wander round and find our own way. It may depend on how much time you have.

We saw the Globe's production of Henry IV Part Two about a month ago and thought it was very good. Generally the RSC's production are more subtle but the Globe has an atmosphere all of its own and is worth a visit if you are a Shakespeare fan.

Henry IV Part One is also getting good reviews, but I've not seen it yet. Given a choice I would definitely go for one of these two.

The Merry Wives of Windsor, which is also on at the moment, has been less well received. Even so if it was me and I had the time / money I would probably give it a go if it is the only possibility. The overall experience at the Globe is worth it.

One tip: you can hire cushions for the evening and this is worth doing.

I'm afraid I read the information just the same as you, Roy; there are no RSC productions anywhere during that week. The great thing about that website is they cover all RSC productions wherever the company goes. Sorry.

You may be disappointed with a tour at the moment, or maybe enthralled. The whole Stratford-upon-Avon theatre complex is being rebuilt and productions are staged in smalller ancillary theatres.

Last month, when I had a great meal across the street at Carluccios all I could see was hoardings and wire fence.

I'm not sure what completion date they are shooting for...

Check out the Blackfriers Shakespere theater in your own state--in Staunton, Va. In case you cannot get to the other place, remember this one....

With the construction, as others have said, performances are scattered. I wouldn't consider the Globe lesser, but another great experience.

Check out Oxford or Cambridge for possible Student productions. I saw "Much a do about Nothing" in the cloisters of one of the Oxford Colleges in late May. I don't know if there are any during your dates; but it's worth checking into...it was really inexpensive. Check the National Trust UK site for events...There are outdoor plays all summer...some may still be playing at one of the estates in the Cotswolds in September.

Following up the idea of the last poster Kathleen, I've just had a look at the National Trust event planner and there is no theatre at their properties so late in the year.
