Our first time in Norway, to save some $$ and because "it seemed the way to go" when we visited New Zealand; we are wondering about "hosteling" in Norway?
Does anyone have opinions, advice, experience? Also, can we travel without renting a car? Is September a good time or should we go earlier?
We just got back from Norway
If you are going into the Fjord region there are plenty trains and boats that can take you around. Especially if you are doing Norway in A Nutshell. That is very well planned out for no car scenarios.
We personally didn't hostel while in Norway but we did meet a couple that was. They had a lot of success doing so. I think there are several choices in both Oslo and Bergen.
Supposedly July and August are the peak times for travel. I would think that you would have a pretty good experience in september
Likewise we are traveling to Norway, but in August and a friend in Stockholm is loaning us a car. Starting in Oslo can we do a two night trip into Norway in a Nutshell then back to Oslo and still have a good time not consumed by car travel. It seems like distances are not large but twisty roads may make for long travel time.
thanks
Gayl,
We went to Norway in September (late September) from Stockholm to Oslo by train....and followed the Norway in a Nutshell tour recommended by RSTEVES and this is all very doable. You don't need a car. I worked with a company out of Gig Harbor WA - Five Stars of Scandinavia and found some incredible deals...and we traveled independently. Voss is a beautiful area and you will love Oslo. GOOD LUCK!
