Are self-drive tours in Norway worth while? Does the cost compare reasonably to booking all your own reservations?
Also, I wondered about the best option for flying from Oslo to Paris.
We are going to Bergen also for a week in May. Who did you rent a car from and what was your driving route?? Any hotels on the route that stand out??
Thanks
Greg
We rented a car in Bergen in June, 2005, and spent 7 days driving in a loop around the fjord area. It was incredibly beautiful. I could help you more if you asked more specific questions... I remember planning our trip was more complicated than planning trips to the UK, Ireland, or France.
We rented from Hertz. We drove to Voss--2 nights at Fleischer's. One day we drove south east and visited a spot where there are several waterfalls. I think it was called Voringfossen (fossen means waterfall.) Then we drove northeast, took the Flam train round trip, stopped at the Hoppersted stave church at Vik, took the ferry across to Balestrand, stayed two nights at Kvikne's (stay in the old part.) Then we drove north to Geiranger, passing glaciers and taking the high pass road which is to the east of Geiranger. This road still had snow in late June, so it may not even be open in May. At Geiranger we stayed at the Grande Fjord Hotel two nights. During the day, we took the ferry that goes west and north, past all the waterfalls. Leaving Geiranger, we again took the ferry west, then south to Bergen. We stayed at the Admiral Clairion Hotel, the only one which gives you a view of the Bryggen. From Bergen, we flew KLM to London, which involved a plane change in Amsterdam. Two bits about driving in Norway--when a major road approaches a fjord there is no bridge, instead there is a ferry which goes every hour or so. When the road gets high into the mountains, it will suddenly tunnel through the mountain, not go over the top.
