Hi
looking at hiring a car from London and doing a 2.5 week self tour around UK next August. Any hints on who to use for car and accommodation and if this is a cheaper option than rail or is it all too stressful to self drive
Rail and/or bus travel is very convenient in the UK, and if you are going mainly to cities, that is the way to go. If you are going to tour the countryside, then a car is convenient, you can stop wherever you want and set your own pace. Recently we have used Enterprise and found them to be relatively cheap and you get a very recent car - last one we got had 19 miles on it when we picked it up. Their drop off charges are also very reasonable. Since you will be driving on the same side of teh road, that is not an issue. I have never been to Australia, but our son has and he said he was surprised that the roads were more like the UK than here in North America (at least the West). However rent the car as you leave London. Parking - if you can find it - is exporbitant and then there is the congestion fee - and huge fines if you contravene it.
Have a great time whichever way you go.
