Self-catering Apartments in/around London

My family of 5 (husband, children 10 and 14 and Mom) will be visiting London for 4 nights in April. I have been considering an apartment in or around London to provide a little more room and the ability to cook dinner sometimes.

Is this a good idea? The less expensive places seem to be outside the general "London tourist area". How far out is too far? I'm trying to get places close to tubes or railways but I'm not sure how hard it will be to switch tubes coming in to get to our sights. We won't need to be in the city in the evening much--just one night for a play in the West End.

Anyone have a good recommendation?

I would stay in London for convenience. The tube is now really expensive. Find a traveloge or Premier Inn (both good for families to stay in one room)in London and plan on breakfast in your room with groceries and walk or take busses.Or stay in hotels Rick recommends. If you are out of London for a cheaper stay you end up shortening your london sights and spending way too much money and time in transit. And 5 on a tube ride is hectic. London is a great experience, stay there, you may look hard to find a moderate acceptable place but its worth it.I stay 2 blocks from Kensington at Hotel Garden Court. My last trip was November 2006 after 10 prior trips.

It's been several years, but we stayed in the Huntingdon House Apts near the V&A (there were 7 of us). About a 5 min. walk to tube. Buses coming and going constantly. Good apt and location.

Hi Andrea.

We love the Hampstead area...just off Finchley Road on Frognall there is a Hotel with a few apartments. We have stayed in the Hotel..with free breakfst but this year the 3 of us will take a 1 bedroom apartment instead. The hotel is called the Langorf and we think it is great. The email address is langorfhotel.com and you might request Timea as she is the head receptionist. Finchley road has several shops where you can buy food for doing your own cooking.

Mollie
