Scottish highlands in May

I decided to fly into Aberdeen in late May but am unsure whether to go east, Northeast, or Northwest. The last thing I want to do is end up in the car all the time but prefer to stay within a smaller perameter and really get to know an area. So, here are my questions! First of all, is it easy to get out of the Aberdeen airport? Will traffic be fairly tolerable? I last drove on the "other side of the road" in Ireland and it was a bit confusing for me at first so I am hoping Aberdeen wont' be heavy traffic. Second, suggestions on the direction? I love mountains and like to hike - 3-4 hours a day. I enjoy small towns where the people are friendly enough so if I arrive alone, I will have someone to chat with at a pub. Third - am interested in the Scottish Wildcat. While I know I won't see one, it would be interesting if anyone has gone to Scotland to study them and if you have any thoughts, suggestions, or comments.
Fairly specific questions I realize but, it won't hurt to ask!

Getting out of the airport is easy - it's in the country. Traffic is ok. The only issue is roundabouts. Sounds like you want to go west (ranging north west to south west). Cairngorm mountain range to start. Note - this range is challenging. If you want to hike, depending on your ability you may want to link up with some others beforehand. I'd base yourself in a few towns ? Braemar, ? Ballater, ? Aboyne, ? Aviemore. Wildcats are very shy - you will be lucky so if you really want to see one you'll need a guide.
