I am planning to fly into Edingburgh on May 27, and stay and visit the city, and must be in Glasgow on June 2nd. Therefore, I will probably sleep most of the 27th, which leaves me a few days to tour around, before traveling to Glasgow on the second. Can anyone advise me of how best to spend those few days?
You have several options. You could stay in Edinburgh and see the sights as well as doing one or two day trips (Sterling, Inverness, a "highlands coach trip", etc.) Or you could spend 2 nights in Edinburgh- see the sites there, then train to Inverness and see the sites there. ( I don't think you will sleep away the 27th, you should have at least the afternoon if you have a moring arrival time). Lots to do in Inverness- Loch Ness and Urquart castle, Culloden battlefield, Clava Cairns, a cruise on the firth, whisky distilleries- even a day trip to Isle of Skye and Ellien Donan castle, the Great Glen or Glen Coe, or a LONG day trip to Orkney. What are your interests? That would help us give you more specific suggesstions.
Toni's right, it would help to know your interests. Edinburgh itself is worth some time. If you arrive in the AM, you want to try to stay awake or you will fight jet lag the entire trip. Some people like to take a quick nap--hour max!-- and then head out. You want to do something with walking. Or pick one sight--maybe the castle--and check it out with it's views. You can stop and have tea for a break. Your goal is to stay away until 9 PM. ; ) I would suggest Pitlochry as another place to explore. I just checked the Festival Theater Special and Whisky Galore! The Musical is playing. I bet it 's a hoot. http://www.pitlochry.org.uk/page13.php?id=32&month=2009-05-01 There's also a distillery in town that has a nice tour. You can also get to Blair Castle by train. Pam
Blair castle is very nice. The village of Blair Athol is the train stop and it is very picturesque. We visited it two years ago. Aviemore is also a lovely village you can get to by a short train ride from Edinburgh. The hotel across the street from the station is the Caringorm Hotel. It is lovely- looks like a small castle- and has WONDERFUL food. You can take a funicular up the Caringorm Mt. and there is a restored steam train that does a round trip to/from Boat of Garten with great views of the country.
