Scotland train travel

Hi, We will arrive in Scotland from Ireland and want to do all train travel. Eventually end up in Glasgow. We want to travel all over and wonder if you can just rent rooms at last minute showing up. Going in October. Traveling for one week. What is best train ticket to buy, Scotland brit pass for 4 days and then the 3 day for in city?
Will arrive near Cairnryan off ferry from Larne.

Are you sure the places you want to see are accessible by rail? There are some recent posts about what is, and is not, served by rail in Scotland. Double check now to avoid disappointment. I don't know anything about passes, but I'm sure others will chime in.

In October you should be able to find a place, provided you aren't going somewhere that is having a music festival or some other special even. So, check the festival schedules for when you are traveling. Some places may close by the end of October. No matter what you will need to be flexible. Pam

Hi. We just did a trip in June for 2 weeks in Scotland. I went online before the trip and bought tickets on Scotrail. It helps to check train schedules and prices online. For example, one train from Inverness to Edinburgh was much cheaper at 8:45 am than 7:45 am or 9:45 am. Don't know why. But, it saved us money. We traveled by train from Edinburgh to Glasgow to Oban. There were many stops at small towns between Glasgow and Oban, including Loch Lommond. Pretty ride. Then, we took the train from Inverness to Edinburgh, again many stops at small towns in between like Pitlochry and Perth. I would try to pin down destinations you are interested in - then get your train tickets to coordinate with your schedule.

One of the most beautiful train rides is from Inverness to Kle of Lochalsh.
