Scotland to Ireland transition

We're planning our trip to England,Scotland and Ireland. We plan to leave Scotland and get a car in Ireland and drive mainly the southwest and south and departing flying out of Dublin. We're are looking for the best way to get from the Glascow area to Ireland and any Itenerary suggestions.

If you book ahead and can live with the Ryan hoopla, flights from Prestwick to Dublin are next to nothing (25 gbp basic ?).

There are ferries from Stranraer at about the same price, but the origin is hard to get to and it's a longer trip. The prices are about the same as Ryan, above.

I've fiddled with both ideas, but have done neither.

I probably won't comment of south and southwest, since it's not my favorite area, but knowing the number of days available might help others.

We loved south and southwest better than north and northwest/guess you need to do more research to see what appeals to you. Also, can you get car in Dubln and fly out of Shannon?

There is also a ferry from Troon to Larne. Troon is about the same distance as Prestwick from Glasgow by road, and I think it still has a railway station, but check to be sure.
