Scotland to England. Where would you stop?

Hi Everyone,

I am going to be taking the RS Scotland tour next June/July (teacher vacation time). I would like to fly into Edinburgh for the tour and then after the tour, leave out of London.

If you had 2 - 4 days in between the tour ending (in Scot.) and flying home (from London), WHERE would you stop and visit and WHY?

I am planning on taking the train from Edinburgh to London (assuming that's the most reasonable cost-wise).I like taking in scenery, viisting some museums, people-watching and hanging out, and photography.

Thanks! I can't wait to hear where people suggest.

I should have mentioned that I've spent 3 days in London before doing the major sites. I'm looking more for cities/towns/sites on the way to London. Thanks.

Since you have been to London, then there are some place that you might want to explore further in Scotland. First, you could go to Glasgow. This is a dynamic city with interesting museums, good food, good shopping, and a strong museum scene. You could also do some interesting day trips from Edinburgh. Stirling is wonderful and you can get to Bannockburn by public transit. I drove to Dumfermline and to Culross, but you can get to Dumfermline by train and I am sure that there is a bus to Culross. Both are very interesting historically.

The other Scottish suggestions would work better if you rented a car. One would be to visit the Trossachs. There are some lovely glens to explore. You can rent a bike, take it on the steamship down Loch Katrine and then cycle back. Rob Roy MacGregor's supposed grave is in this area at Balquhidder. The Lake of Menteith is beautiful early in the day and you take a boat ride over to see the priory. Another area to explore would be the Borders. You can see the Abby's, Sir Walter Scott's house, Traquair house, and Floors Castle. The Debatable lands have some very interesting tower houses and Hermitage Castle.

Of course, you can just take the train south and stop at York. It's a fascinating place to spend a few days.

With your limited time, I would suggest exploring the Scottish border abbey country, then continuing south into Northumberland and Yorkshire. We are doing this as part of our vacation this June, although travelling north instead of south. If, after you get all of your answers, you are interested in this option, send me a PM and I will make more specific suggestions for this itinerary. (from another teacher!)

We almost always stop in York between Edinburgh and London (or vice versa). It is a lovely city and you can "do" most of it in 1/2 to 3/4 day. I know others think it kitstch, but we liked the Jorvic museum (think Vikings done disneyesque) and York's market is great for a roam around- the Shambles too. Our favorite resturant is a half-timber house near the edge of the market and the Shambles called Gert& Henery's. Good food, reasonalbe prices. Try the fish and chips or the sauted chicken or the roast beef with Yorshire pudding. Also- we stay at the Royal York. It is part of the train station. It has a lovely small garden.

I think you have a western option and and an eastern option.

Since you don't have many days, I'd take the eastern option, it can be done in fewer days. See some of Hadrians Wall, abbey ruins (possibly Jedburgh Abbey) and stay in York for two days. York is an outstanding city for both Medieval and Georgian architecture. The Cathedral, shambles and wall walk are worth seeing.
