I've run into midges and they can be very annoying. The times I've run into them are when I'm out hiking on a still day when it's warm. They are like mosquitos, but smaller. If you are hiking, then you want to be prepared to deal with them. All of us who go on my walking tours with me have midgie hats. These are basically netting that can over your hat and protect your face. You get one big enough that you can sneak you hand up in with a sandwich. ; ) I also carry REI's Jungle Juice. It helps as well. Over the years I've done about 6 weeks worth of walking in the Highlands. I think that I've needed the midgie hat fewer than a half dozen times and when I've needed it, it's not been for the whole day. You can get midgies from May through September. It's the local weather that makes a difference whether or not the midgies are about. And with Scottish weather if you wait a half hour it will likely change. Since you're from Utah you're probably less familiar with this problem than those of us from Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan where occasionally we start thinking of the mosquito as the state bird. ; ) Pam

The midges in Ireland drove me nuts last summer! I was covered in bites. The same happened in France. Does Off work on midges?

I have to say that I rank Midges in Scotland as about equal with Mosquitos in Northern Wisconsin. ; ) Pam
