You can purchase great maps when you arrive. UK's AA (like our AAA) makes great ones and they are sold in stores.
Barnes and Noble sells atlases of Scotland that you might want to purchase.

If you want your maps ahead of time, you can buy them from amazon.com or from amazon.co.uk. Two good ones are the AA road atlas which also nicely marks most historical sites (try to get the one that has pages about 11 by 16 or so. The smaller-paged spiral bound one seems to have all of the spiral going through the most important bits of the map.) I also recommend the orange Michelin regional map number 501. Both maps are about four miles to an inch which is adequate unless you need ORDance survey ones for hiking. We have used both extensively on several trips to the British Isles. We have never needed a GPS, although you might need one if you didn't have both a navigator/map-reader and a driver.

Bev, This is definitely my area of expertise! ; ) I love driving in Scotland and am a bit bummed that I won't have a car during my July visit this year.

So, I've bought maps at Border and Barnes and Noble. You can get Michelin Maps that give you the overview, but it's the Ordnance Survey Maps that are particularly helpful. I've gotten a large Travel Map (Green) that is 1 inch to four miles, which is pretty much all you need for driving. Or you can go with the blue maps that are similar scale, but cover less territory and so can be more manageable in a car. There are larger scale maps. And if you decide to do any walking you'll want to look into these maps. The pink maps are 1.25 inches to a mile. I have one of these for Orkney. It covers just the Mainland of Orkney. If you really need to do some serious walking then the Orange maps are for you. They are 2.5 inches to a mile.

I've done a lot of driving in Scotland. If you want to PM me with questions feel free. Also, try to order Iain Banks book Raw Spirit. It's about a search for the perfect dram, but also about driving the wee roads of Scotland.
