We will be flying into Heathrow and want to spend a few nights in London and a few in Edinburgh -
Any suggestions on places to stop along the way to fill in the gaps? We'll be doing it all by train.
Castles, good Food, Drinks, Scenery... Thanks!
York is a very logical stopover. If you're driving take in the Dales as well. Rivaux Abbey and Howard were really interesting. I also liked Durham. The cathedral is really wonderful and the old town is lovely. As you get over the border you can stop and see a bit of Hadrians Wall, or head for Jedburgh if you didn't get to see Rivaux. Once in Edinburgh there are lots of things to see and do. If you still have a spare day, take the train to Stirling and check out the castle and the spectacular views. You'll soon understand why this castle was so key to ruling Scotland. Pam
This is a great way to see some very interesting parts of the UK. I'd suggest 3 or 4 days in London- one theatre night (or 2) and 1 or 2 day trips selected from the following: Windsor, Canterbury/Dover, Bath, Cardiff, Stratford-Upon Avon, Winchester, Oxford or Cambridge. Then take the train to York and spend 1 night (you can get a taste of York in 1 day). Then train to Edinburgh. Spend 3-5 days there. You could spend 1 night in Edinburgh and train to either Aviemore or Inverenss if you'd rather have more of a taste of the highlands. If you stay in Edinburgh, do a day trip to the highlands. Then train back to London for flight home. In London we stay at the Victoria Thistle/Grosover in Victoria Station, in York at the Royal York (also in the rail station) and in Edinburgh at the Royal British- across Princes St. from the station. In York be sure to eat at Gert and Henery's it is in a half-timeber building at the edge of the market near the Shambles- great roast beef with yorkshire pudding and unbeliveable sauted chicken with roasted potatoes. Fell free to private message me for more ideas.
I think Toni's suggestion are really good. I'm a fan of Bath, York and Oxford. I liked Cardiff Castle a lot and think you should try to see something in Wales if possible. Edinburgh is great and I hear raves about Inverness (but haven't been yet).
