Taking a group of 66 to Scotland and some staying on for London. Is it best to use cash or credit cards for purchases? THANKS!
I don't think there's any advantage to either, is there, or am I missing the point? Unless you can get a cheaper deal for cash. If you do pay cash, make sure you get a receipt.
We prefer using cash for food & drink and our credit cards for accomodations and purchases. In a group of 66 people I would be more worried about ordering separate checks for meals!!!
Thanks! We are traveling with a tour company - and several in the group are asking about $$. From what I've seen today - getting cash when we get there is the way to go. Hotel accommodations are already covered and we only need to handle one meal/day (others are covered) plus spending money for gifts, incidentals, etc. Found out my OWN bank charges a $5 fee plus a 3% transaction fee for using the card..... ugh.
Yes, getting cash from an ATM with your debit/ATM card is the way to go. Best rates for debit cards: some credit unions, Schwab Bank, and there are others. Do a search here and you'll find lots of discussion. For credit cards, Capital One is good about not charging foreign transaction fees. There are others, too. I have a Bank of America card that doesn't, but most of theirs do. Be sure and notify banks/credit card companies the dates you're going overseas or your card may be blocked and unusable without that expensive call home to try and get it unblocked.
I always use a mix. I usually pay cash for food and drink and some tours. But for my gifts and things I often use the credit card. The gifts I've bought in Scotland include sweaters, jewelry, music CD's, whisky, other woolens etc. Oh, once or twice I bought some art! Pam
Check about currency conversion fees from your ATM and credit cards. If you don't have a credit card without currency conversion fees then only charge big purchases not lunch or dinner. If you have a card that doesn't charge then use it liberally and save cash for places that don't take credit. Check the ATM fees and you'll probably find you want to pull out larger amounts fewer times then continually pull out small amounts.
Remember to tell both your ATM bank and credit card companies that you will be in Ireland and the dates to prevent problems due to 'suspicious activity' before you leave.
We use our Capital One credit card for as many transactinos as we can. Then we get cash back on our charges. There are no transactin fees with Capital One. I think Chase offers transaction free charges also.
