What would be a must do rail trip in Scottish Highlands?

Check out the website of the Man in Seat 61. Among other things, he describes the most scenic train routes in the British Isles, along with extensive instructions for how to best arrange your visit, purchase your tickets, etc.

I have to say that the trip from Edinburgh is very good, but the one that had me running from one side of the rail car to the other was the trip from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh. I first took this trip with my sister in 1977we were toddlers. ; ) I had my graduation present 35mm Canon and I couldn't take enough pictures. On the same trip we took a bus from Mallaig to Fort William and on to Glasgow, but it was in the fog. ; ( Since then I've driven around the area and taken many train trip and car trips. I think that I will stand with the trip from Edinburgh to Kyle of Lochalsh as the most beautiful. PAm

AA ,Kim , and Pam , There is a great video travelogue on this very subject by Michael Palin ( Monty Python ) entitled " Confessions of a Trainspotter " from 1980 , wherein he travels by rail , the length of Britain , from London to Skye via Inverness . It's a great adventure with his wonderful sense of wry humor . Also , Michael Portillo's series " Great British Railway Journeys " ( about nine trips ) covers areas of Scotland ( Edinburgh to Kircaldy , Ayr , Skye ,and others ) Also , great vicarious travel . These are all available on YOUTUBE . Pam , with your extensive experience traveling in Scotland , I'm sure you'll get a kick out of these !!

Thanks Steven. I've seen some of Michael Palen's other shows--the Himalaya one is really good! Pam

Ooh that sounds like a fun one Steven! Will have to find it. I'm dying to get back to Scotland, I lived there as a little girl for a year, but have never been back (even living this close!!). :(.
