My wife & I are considering a two week motor trip through Scandinavia next summer. Any suggestions on a good itinerary? Thanks, Marty
Great to see that someone wants to DRIVE in Scandinavia-all I ever see here is "Norway in a Nutshell."......I can help by describing our Norway driving trip which we did in June, 2005. Fly to Bergen, drive to Voss, 2 nights at Fleischer's Hotel, spent day driving south east of there, seeing Vorringfossen....drive to Flam (you never saw so many waterfalls!!!)took train up and back, stopped at Vik Stave Church, ferry to Balestrand, old part of Kvikne's Hotel, 2 nights, day drive around that area...drive to Geiranger Fjord...2 nights Grand Fjord Hotel, day trip was taking the ferry round trip through the Geiranger Fjord and up into the next one, should have added one more night here to visit Alesund, maybe drive the troll road....drove to Bergen, overnight at Admiral Clarion Hotel because they have some rooms which face the Bryggen, spent the afternoon touring the Bryggen, took the cable car up the mountain, superb dinner at the restaurant on the Bryggen with the unicorn symbol (sorry, name eludes me but it is in the tour books)....turned in car next day about noon and flew to London....Norway has excellent roads, fjords are crossed by frequent ferry boats, not bridges....we were very happy with out hotel choices...car rental/gas were no more than other European countries....most meals were pretty dull except Kvikne's most were buffet type places, not my favorites....wine/beer were extremely expensive....beautiful Norwegian sweaters for sale in lots of locations.
Depends on interest. For nature, spend most time in Norway. Easiest driving would be in Denmark (flat topography). Rental cars expensive in N, do not know about D or S. One-way rental VERY expensive. You could start in Copenhagen, drive over to Sweden via Oresund bridge, go north via Gothenburg to Oslo, south Kristiansand, Stavanger, Bergen, tour the West, back to Oslo then ferry to Denmark mainland, back to C.
We started in Stockholm, drove down to Kalmar which has a great medieval castle, then over to Vaxjo stopping at the Orrefors & Kosta Boda glass factories along the way, then over to Halmstad on the west coast, up to Goteborg, and on north to Oslo. Then we took a train from Oslo to Bergen & flew home from Bergen, via Copenhagen. Great trip & the roads in both Sweden & Norway were excellent.
Driving in Scandinavia is a pleasure.
I don't know how much ground you want to cover, but this is a loop I have done over several shorter trips; you could cover it in 2 weeks if you wanted to keep on the move: Start in Copenhagen, bridge to Malmo and head up the coast of Sweden and into Norway. Keep going north after Oslo to Lillehamer and on up to Trondheim (a beautiful city with a very old cathedral). Then backtrack a bit to Oppdal and head west to the coast via Molde (great music festival if you hit it right) to Alesund (spectacular and interesting). Then down the coast via tunnels and ferries, with stops to visit whichever fjord intrigues you. At Bergen, loop back to Oslo and backtrack south as far as Goteborg. Ferry from there to Fredrikshavn in Denmark. Be sure and visit Skogen before heading back south to Copenhagen to return the car.
If that is too fast and too much driving, just do the Norway part of the loop, starting and ending in Oslo. You could visit Copenhagen first by flying into there, then take the ferry up to Oslo to pick up the car.
If I were driving, Uppsala and Kalmar, Sweden would be on my itinerary (as well as Stockholm). I'm into history and both have great roots.
We spent our time in Denmark in Zealand. With a car I would have visited parts of Jutland as well.
