Hello - was thinking about going to Scandinavia at the end of Sept for 2 weeks. Has anyone gone up to the northern end (near Tromso maybe) to see the Northern Lights? And is end of September a good time? I read on the internet that it was but not sure. I also want to see the other major cities (Stockholm, Oslo, Helsinki and any other cute cities in between down in south area). Is this all doable in 2 weeks and to get around would be best by air or train..?
Thank you all for your help!
Northern lights in September? Check the sunrise-sunset times for September. Here is the US Naval Observatory website tool:
http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneYear.php We got to N71deg 04min/E27deg 4min mid-April several years ago. Sunrise was pretty early (about 3 am standard time) and sunrise (about 19:30 or 7:30pm) and twilight lasted a pretty long time. We took Finnair from Helsinki to Ivalo above the arctic circle. Scandinavia is pretty long. You could check the Norwegian NSB.NO for train routes.
Northern lights is for winter. :) September is still fairly light out and it's only going to have a couple of hours (maybe) of darkness around 3am, but that won't be real darkness.
Well, according to these and several other websites they say September is actually a good time to go to Tromso to watch the Northern lights.. Which is why I was asking here to see if anyone has done that. They say it gets dark at 6p and season for lights start in Sept. But also not so cold that we'd be freezing to death which is a good thing! http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g190475-i2314-k5320580-Some_facts_about_the_Northern_Lights_the_Moon_and_weather-Tromso_Troms_Northern_Norway.html http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g190475-i2314-k5415882-Northern_lights_in_mid_September_2012_Tromso-Tromso_Troms_Northern_Norway.html
