A friend and I are doing a short trip to the Salisbury / Winchester area for a bit of sightseeing and then on to The New Forest the next morning before going back to London. I'd like to stay somewhere with a bit of history and/or that's just very "British." I don't mind paying a little more for a memorable trip. We won't have a car, so it's important that it is somewhat convenient to get to the train station. I'm having a hard time deciding where might be a nice place to stay, so your thoughts and advice would really be appreciated. Thanks so much in advance for your advice.

I used to, until recently, go to Winchester every year to visit family. I often passed the Wessex Hotel on the way to the Cathedral and can say it looked very nice and has a good reputation with Winchester residents. It is about a 10 or 12 minute walk down the High Street from the train station, but there are always taxis at the station, too. The Wessex is very close to the Cathedral. The Tourist Office, where a very obliging staff is happy to help & answer questions, is a short walk away near King Alfred's statue.
