I am interested in how you view the safety for a traveler on his own in London. I am considering staying in the Victoria Station area, and I would like to wander about in the evenings. Your thoughts? JB
I have gone many times by myself and just don't stay out too too late, and if I go to see a show I usually take a cab back to my hotel. I have stayed around Victora Station area and there are lots of people walking around, just use common sense like in any big city and you will be fine. Another tip for traveling alone, I like to take the Original London Walks www.walks.com, cheap and very interesting just meet up at the tube station on time and get an interesting view of a part of the city. They also do days out of London and they are 1/4 of the cost of any big tour company and more interesting. Have fun.
I travel solo a lot, and I just use the same common sense that I would use at home about walking around at night. Don't wander into dark, secluded places, stay aware of your surroundings, etc. There are lots of people about in London in the evening, and you should be fine.
We often stay in the Victora Station area. Unless you are planning on being out in what the Scots refer to as the "wee smas" (1am-4am), I don't think you will have a problem. We have returned from concerts or the theatre around 11-12pm via the tube and never had a problem. As the previous poster said- avoid dark alleys, use common sense and walk purposefully and stay aware and you should be fine. The station itself is well lit, as are the tube stations and platforms.
Jerry I pass through Victoria regularly late at night on my way back to Brighton, and it would never occur to me to worry about safety. The area is fairly lively until at least midnight. Obviously, as other people have said, take the usual precautions you would take in any big city - avoid dark alleys, walk away from anything that looks like trouble - but other than that feel free to wander and enjoy yourself. Alan PS Try a pint in the Plumber's Arms in Lower Belgrave Street if you're in the area. Nancy, Toni, and Alan...
Thank you for your responses. I will take your advice about safety and good pubs and make wise use of it. I am planning a trip in April or May for about a week, and I do not want to spend more time in the room than rest requires. I appreciate assistance. JB
Hi Jerry, I just got back from London, stayed in the Victoria Station area and felt very safe walking around even at 11 at night. We even took a bus and walked around the Westminster Bridge/Parliament area and just ran into a bunch of tourists like us taking pictures. We were 2 females traveling together.
