Safe London hotel area for older female solo traveler.

I will be traveling to London for 4 days in July. Does anyone have a recommendation for a safe hotel area for a middle aged female traveling solo? Also, how much does it cost to take the Chunnel train to Paris?

The train that goes through the channel tunnel is called the Eurostar. You can check prices on eurostar.com. Tickets go on sale 120 days before travel. The prices are cheapest then and only go up as you get closer to the date. Many areas in London are quite safe. I often stay near Earls Court or Gloucester Road. In this area, I particularly like base2stay which has reasonably priced single rooms with nice amenities like a small fridge, microwave, free wireless, and nice walk-in shower. Other areas that are often recommended include Belgravia and Bloomsbury.

The area my wife and I love is the area in South Kensington around the Gloucester Road tube station. This is just one station up from the Earls Court station. The Millenium Gloucester Hotel would be my recommendation to you. This area is within walking distance to the museums and Hyde Park, and has some nice pubs and cafes there too. Buy your tickets online in advance for the Eurostar to Paris to get the best fares.

Last September we stayed at base2stay in Kensington and thought the hotel and location were great. The amenities were appreciated because we could purchase dinner and eat in our hotel room if we were tired and didn't want to go out. It was nice to have the fridge/microwave/electric teakettle. The hotel is very close to the tube and in a safe neighborhood. I felt totally safe walking around there. Carole

Jan, if you stay in any of the neighborhoods mentioned above, or any place else in the West End, you'll be fine. Pay attention to the hotel's distance from the Tube station, etc.
