Two women planning to visit both Canterbury and Rye on a two week tour. Which town has the best accomodations? Suggestions of places to stay would be appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks for the information! Have you any experience with the Jeake's House in Rye as a place to stay?
Rye is much, much, much smaller. You may prefer one or the other. Do you want a large town with plenty of eating and sleeping choices, and all the advantages and disadvantages that a large town have; or do you prefer a small place with a few places to stay and eat, with all the advantages and disadvantages that a small place has. I prefer Rye, but that's me. YMMV.
I have visited both a number of times on car tours around England. If you were using it as a base I would use canterbury, large town with very interesting cathedral and surrounding areas. Rye is a very small (but ppicturesque ) town with very interesting but limited sightseeing. however if I were touring through, by car as i normally do, I would spend at least half a day in canterbury exploring the cathedral and the surrounding (mediaeval?) areas, and overnight at rye. You can wander around the main areas that evening and next morning I would absolutely try to get into the legendary and historic Mermaid inn/Hotel with its links to the old smuggler trade. Getting ointo the Mermaid wuld make it a slam dunk chooice Nearby Tenterden is also interesting with a number of inns and B&Bs
