Hi All! We are traveling to Russia in four weeks and are looking for the best Russian guidebook we can find to help us plan an affordable, interesting trip. We noticed that the last Rick Steves guidebook on Russia was published in 1998. Is there a reason why a new edition hasn't been published since then? Can anyone recommend a guidebook that might be similar to Rick Steves' guidebook? We've used Rick Steves' guidebooks extensively throughout Europe. Thanks!
Frommer's puts out a guidebook for Moscow & St. Petersburg (last d in 2010). They are pretty similar to a Rick Steves' guidebook as far as recommendations for lodging and restaurants that won't cost an arm & leg, but are a step up from backpacker haunts. DK Insight Guides & Fodors also have some Russia books, but I find Fodors to be for people who can really afford to splurge on a trip if they want. I've used Rough Guide for other countries, and find they also give you a decent choice in lodging & restaurant recommendations that cover the budget gamut. I love Rough Guide and Lonely Planet for how comprehensive they are (although you should always double check things like opening hours, admission pricing, etc before you leave as these are guides which are not d yearly).
I used Lonely Planet. Rough Guides also have one. They're both good for logistics. If you want more sightseeing info and are staying in the west try Odyssey - http://www.odysseypublications.com/publicationsPublication.php?publicationID=00045
