Robin Hood & Sherwood Forrest Anybody been there?

We'll be in London w/our 11year old grandson. He loves Robin Hood. Thinking about a day trip to Nottingham. Is it worth it? Have any suggestions?

Has your grandson seen the new film? how he became Robin Hood?

I was in Nottingham years ago for non-Robin Hood related purposes, and unless things have really changed... your 11 year old grandson will be rather disappointed.

I haven't personally visited Sherwood Forrest, but supposedly, it's little more than a small strand of trees today.

We were in Nottingham a few years ago and did visit Sherwood Forest. The Forest is not what it once was but there is a path through it. Still, the Major Oak is pretty impressive and for an 11-year old with an imagination, good fun. There is also the Castle and museum and I think for someone who loves Robin it's a nice day out. Going to London with a grandchild sounds like a lot of fun.

Keep in mind that "Sherwood Forest" also encompasses the entire village, not just the area with trees.

We went with our children several years ago. Kids liked it fine. Touring the "forest" was ok with them. They liked the tea with sandwiches for lunch a lot. In Nottingham, they enjoyed the castle and the "Oldest Pub in England". I cannot remember its name but it is carved into the hillside, under the castle. Also, there are several shops selling all kinds of Robin Hood stuff. Hats, swords, bows and arrows, etc. However, getting some of the above home, unless packed in checked luggage would be a problem.

The think they remember most was on the trip back, we stopped at a motor cycle convention/static aircraft display, halfway between Sherwood Forrest and Nottingham and they got to climb over, under and inside 40 or so planes plus go through the museum. That was a hight light of the trip, and totally unintended.

John - you're thinking of Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem... nice pub... not so good if you're over 6 foot tall and had a trifle too much to drink... low ceilings and alcohol impaired reactions don't mix well.

The kids really "loved" the menu when they read it and saw spotted dick on it. I asked if they wanted to order some, but they declined, giggling all the way. I think my son stole a menu, not sure, but I think he did to show his friends at home when when he got back. He was about 11 or 12 at the time.

Yep. That menu item always impresses the kids. Been known to get the attention of some adults, too.:)
