You have lots of options! If you've not been to Scotland before I would suggest a couple of days in Edinburgh, without the car. Think about going to an Island other than Skye. If you want to go Oban, think about going straight to Mull and staying there instead of staying in Oban. Tobermory is a great place to stay. You can explore Mull a bit--there are a couple of castles--take a boat ride to Staffa and Iona and maybe another boat to check out the wildlife! http://www.tobermory.co.uk/

From Oban, you want to head north. You can see more of the west coast which is beautiful. I would plot a very scenic route from Oban to Skye. If you want to get away from the typical tourist path check out Ardnamurchan. http://www.ardnamurchan.com/ Or head straight for Skye. Bear in mind that Skye is a big island and it takes a while to get around it. The Cuillin Mountains are unique and Loch Coruisk is beautiful. The Talisker distillery would be a good whisky tasting. Also, on Skye is a Broch and Dunvegan Castle.

You can see Loch Ness very easily from Inverness. I would recommend the Urqhart Castle on Loch Ness. But Inverness has more to offer. Think Culloden Battlefield, Cawdor Castle, Fort George and the Clava Cairns. You need a some mystical stone circles on any visit to Scotland! East of Inverness is the Spey river valley where there is whisky tasting galore. ; )

As usual, Pamela is pretty spot on with her recommendations. All I want to add is that if you choose to spend your time on Mull and then onward to Skye one option that makes it easy to include Ardnamurchan (and some other sites along the west coast) is to get an Island Hopscotch (#7) ferry ticket from Caledonian MacBrayne (http://www.calmac.co.uk/). You can then get tickets from Oban - Craignure (Mull), Tobermory - Kilchoan (on Ardnamurchan peninusula) and then Mallaig to Armadale (Skye). Then you can take the bridge to the mainland on your way back from Skye enroute to the Loch Ness/Inverness area. This worked well for me last year (NOTE: This ticket is only valid part of the year late March to late Oct I believe).

Apart from that my only real recommendation is to let us know what your interests are and we may be able to give more detailed ideas on things to see/do you have tons of options!

Happy travels!
