Just read about the rioting in Belfast, and that it has been going on for 4 days. I had thought about taking the 2 hour train ride to Belfast one of the days I am in Dublin. But now not sure I should. Someone said it is only in certain neighborhoods and the city itself would be okay. Just wondering what others think. Thanks!
Political riots don't tend to erupt city-wide, and they also tend to be short-lived. I was in Brussels once during a "riot" and I didn't even learn about it until I checked my email from family members, asking if I was alright. Just use standard precautions- avoid large gatherings of people, avoid Protestant parade marches, etc.
It looks like it's starting to peter off.
Also, that area is pretty well out of the way and probably the only way you'd get out there was on a tour bus of some kind to see the murals.
I've been several places with big demos and riots. You can see/hear them from a distance and it's not hard to detour around them, even walking.
I was interested to see where the Titanic was built. Do you think it is worth taking the time to see Belfast? I have just been reading mixed reviews of Belfast in google searches.
It was isolated incident on Ardyone Road that occurred because of a march. I wouldn't worry much about it at all.
The Titanic area is much-touted, but not worth stopping to see -- this from the guide on the tour bus we rode as we passed by. Thre are entertainment venues over that way, but not much left of the shipworks which is now mainly defunct.
Belfast is an interesting place with great folks. The Titanic business is not a reason to go there.
We are leaving in about 6 hours for the airport. I guess I should consider not going to Belfast for the day. Thanks for your replies.
