Retiring to England

Well, the time to retire is quickly approaching (3 years), so my wife and I are starting the process of deciding what our next move will be. We love England, particularly Bath, Somerset or York, and my relatives come from Staffordshire from the mid-1800's. Can anyone make some suggestions about where we should start with regard to the immigration process? As I understand that this can be costly and very lengthy, we would also consider alternatives such as living 6 months per year in the U.S. and England. I realize that this is a very broad question, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. And thank you for anything you might add.

Thank you, I read that the other day. What is very clear is the need to keep up with the various laws, both in the States and the UK.

I cant help with detail about immigration to the UK (have only done this in the opposite direction in the past), although from US friends' experiences living in the UK for part of the year can be achieved much more easily than full immigration. But I expect there will be others here who can point you in the direction of the relevant websites.
However, what surprises my US friends is the cost of UK properties - I suggest you check this out early on - one website you could look at is rightmove.co.uk.

Thank you, Katy, very helpful. It is looking more and more like full immigration is less reasonable, and rental is the best direction to go as well.

There used to be a retirement visa, but that category has been closed, and there is no plans at present for it to be re-opened. This required demonstration of independent means (a minimum annual income of £25k without working), and an affinity with the UK amongst other things.
