Has anyone had experience in short notice advance reservations for double rooms in Ireland hostels. We are traveling by bicycle and between hills, rain, getting lost, I don't want to reserve too far in advance and then have to cancel. It's a 4-5 week trip in the SW in late May/June and we will be doing a lot of roaming the area.

I went to Dublin 2x this summer, and both times I booked beds within a week of my trip, at very good rates (I recommend Four Courts), but this was for 8-20 bed rooms, not private ones. Some hostels allow you to cancel within 48 hrs or something, and you only lose the deposit which is 10% of the rate. If you get a good rate, i.e. 10-15 euros, then you don't lose that much. Maybe they'll let you postpone it.
