Hello,
I need to rent a car in Ireland for a week. We'll be flying into Dublin and out of Shannon. I really do not want to pick up car in Dublin but rather rent outside of town. I'm having difficulties finding a smaller location that I can do this.
We'll be heading south along the coast after our stay in Dublin. Does anyone have any information to help? Also, I want an automatic (not really that brave ).
Thank you,
Marcia
Auto Europe has a pick up point on Old Killmainham Road which is just south of the N4 highway on the far southwest side of Dublin. Traffic should not be an issue.
Marcia,
I'd highly recommend taking a GPS unit with you, in addition to a good Map (Michelin?). Some of the smaller roads are not that well marked, and some of the signs have been "modified" with spray paint.
Also, you'll need to allow LOTS of time for travel as travel there generally seems to take longer than it does in this part of the world.
Happy travels!
Thanks much to both of you. I do have a good map- Ordnance Survey Atlas from another good tip here. I thought about the GPS- can I get one here in the States and download Irish maps? Or would I need to rent one with the car?
So pleased to find somewhere to rent car outside of Dublin!
Thanks again,
Marcia
Hi,Marcia. Y9ouo can get a Garmin Nuvi 270 on CompUSA for $121.98 with both US and Europe maps. You get 1 free update, which we got for Europe. It's a decent older GPS.
Alternatively - if you spend a little more, you can get a Garmin GPS with Europe on it (any model ending in 70) that plays MP3's- and VERY COOL - there are websites where you can Download audio guides to your GPS that will automatically play the tour/audio guide as you drive past the locations! :)
We found Ebctravel.com (Europe by Car) had by far the best rate on Irish 1 week rentals. FYI. Cheers! Chris
Marcia, we just returned from Ireland. Two thoughts ... First, although you definitely need a printed map for backup, I'd really recommend that you purchase a GPS (we used our Nuvi 270) and learn to use it before you go. Not required, but it will make you travel "life" a lot easier. Second, if you can get a good deal (we used Autoeurope, assigned to Europcar), don't worry about renting your car at the airport. You might find it easier getting south on the motorways, rather than working your way south on city streets.
Hertz are situated south of the city on South Circular Road. Easy to set off to Wicklow and other points south from this location
Excellent help! I'm checking into it all and feel much more confident. Now I just can't wait to start packing!
Thanks,
Marcia
