I plan to go to Kent. I am thinking of renting a car, but don't want to be driving in London. Is there a Tube station that would have nearby car rentals? Or would I need to go to Gatwick. I would like to drive in country areas vs city...I feel comfortable driving on outskirts of cities, but not down in them.
Doesn't Kent live in the Pacific Northwest?
Steve is correct. Kent is essentially within commuting distance of London.
I'm not aware that any Tube stops in south London are close to rental car shops, but the odds favor that, depending on how you define "close".
However, I'd suggest picking a town in Kent to use as a start or a base for your explorations and getting there via train. Rent the car there. You stand a very good chance of finding a rental outlet within easy walking distance of the station, or within a short cab ride. (Even in the smaller stations, there are bound to be one of two cabs waiting outside. If not, ask a clerk for the number to call.)
If you have a good map and a clear picture of how to get out of town, driving for a few minutes in a Kentish town shouldn't be a problem. Getting out of town won't take long at all.
You could take the train out to Horley...a 40 minute train ride from London Victoria station. There is a great car rental company in Horley, they would pick you up at the train station if you let them know what time you would be arriving. Here is the website for the car rental......http://www.scarlettcarhire.co.uk/
Maidstone would be a good choice for a pick up point. It's a one-hour train ride from Victoria and Auto Europe has service there.
Tube lines that come our way stop in the inner suburbs and I would not rec that anyone try to drive from there, the road system is busy and tortuous. So overground railway it is.
Agree Maidstone or maybe Ashford or Tonbridge, whichever is nearest to your first destination.
BTW - Kent was SE of London last time I looked out the window!
Take a train SE and rent a car from Gatwick.
