re the train from Fort William to Mallaig-is it worthwhile?

Its me again, with a different quandary. Thanks to all of you, I may actually get this trip pulled together. I plan to spend 3 nights in Oban, d/t Rick Steves recommendation to see Iona. (Some of you may remember an earlier post about staying in Mallaig, which most of you discouraged) Instead, I'm now considering a couple of nights at Kyleakin on Skye, then going on to Inverness for several days. The problem is that if I take the bus/coach directly to Kyleakin from Oban it will take 3 hours, 40 minutes. If I go through Mallaig, using buses and take the train journey from Fort William, it will take about 5 hours to Mallaig and another 3+ hours to Kyleakin from Mallaig (all according to travelinescotland). I love beautiful scenery, but is this worth it? This also impacts whether or not to buy a railpass. Thanking you in advance, Liz

Good point, Ken-I did run on a bit. If I take the route which includes the train ride from Fort William to Mallaig (which is supposed to be a beautiful route), it nearly triples the journey time. Is the rail potion worth the extra time, considering that I may never get back to that part of the world.

Apparently this is not a well traveled route. I think I WILL take the train and let you all know about it when I get back. I'm also debating between train and bus between Kyleakin and Inverness-any ideas?

Hi Liz,

I have nothing to offer about the train but I stayed at the Mackinnon Country house hotel in Kyleakin two years ago and loved it. It's run by nice people and the food was very good.

Cheers,

Lisa
