I saw what looked like a fun tour out of London or Oxford....tours of the Midsomer Murder locations (TV Show). The locations are so pretty, I was wondering if anyone had ever taken one of the tours, and what you thought of it. Cherrio!
Never took a formal tour but we drove the villages - it's very beautiful country!
Laurel, I haven't heard about that tour, but it sounds interesting. Have you got a web link? Midsomer Murders will be coming on the telly in about half an hour (right after Heartbeat, which I'm watching now). Cheers!
Laurel, I don't know anything about the tours. However, I can tell you that no matter how much research you do, it is nearly impossible to find locations. We researched websites for town names and had a detailed Michelin road atlas and found many of the towns. However, recognizing any of the locations was another matter entirely. That said, if you decide against the tour, there are many lovely towns and country even if you cannot identify specifics from the series.
This site has pictures of TV locations including Midsomer Murders. As usual it seems that several locations are used per episode. Like magic tricks maybe it's better not to know how it's done? http://www.tvlocations.net/tvlocationsseries.htm
Linda's right. Back in the early 90's I was impressed by the way the (in my opinion) not-safe-for-tv Lovejoy novels of J. Gash, had been adapted for TV in the BBC series starring Ian McShane (and a terrific ensemble cast). I'd just gotten internet service and decided to use my bandwidth that came with it, to put up a Lovejoy fan page. I inherited a series episode guide and also put that online, and received lots of supplementary info from other fans, including a guy in the UK who provided info on shooting locations for each episode. Eventually I traveled to the UK, in 1998, and he and I traveled around East Anglia on a sort of "Lovejoy location tour." What I learned was that the producers would shoot at locations strewn around the area, even if the action takes place pretty much in one or two towns or villages as seen in an episode. So, the exterior of one pub, and the interior of another, which could be 20 miles apart, would show up in a episode as being the pub in a town. You might see the characters walk out of the pub and then cross the street, and go into a shop. But that shop could be in yet another town or village. Easy peasey if you've got good directing, editing, and continuity work. I assume they do the same thing with Midsomer Murders.
Ken, There were a few companies...I http://www.absolutetouring.co.uk/places/midsomer-murders-country on your own: http://www.visitbuckinghamshire.org/midsomer-murders http://www.visitbuckinghamshire.org/great-days-out/midsomer-murder-mystery-tours-with-sho4travel-p881671
britmovietours.com I doubt I'd acutually remember episodes and locations, but still sounded like a nice day out
Laurel, I agree - it does sound like a nice day out. I wasn't nearly as focused on the Lovejoy location trivia as was my traveling companion back in 1998. I was just enjoying the heck out of seeing the sights in East Anglia!
I agree with others that that one might be a bit tricky... I visited Avoca which was the exterior setting for Ballykissangel, which was quite neat. So many of the exteriors were shot there. And Morse/Lewis are also easy in that so much of Oxford is used... every time I watch I'm able to say OOhh, I walked there! I'm sure it'd be scenic, not sure how much you'd really recognize from MM.
I used the information from the website that Linda mentions. A drive through the towns listed is pleasant, however, if finding places you have seen on the series is what you are seeking, it will be a wild goose chase. If there is a tour which covers filming sites for the series, the will likely know the addresses and point out houses, streets, squares, etc. actually appearing on the series.
