Quick Sognefjord tour

Hey,

I am a college student currently studying in Norway. My mom is coming to visit in about a month and we will see a few different places in Europe.

We are flying from Milan to Bergen, arriving in the afternoon on June 4th. We plan to spend the rest of the 4th in Bergen, and then take the Sognefjord express boat from Bergen on the morning of the 5th at 8:00.

This is where things get fun. We need to be in Flåm on June 6 in time to catch the 17:25 departure to Myrdal, which connects us to our train to Oslo.

The plan had originally been to do Norway in a Nutshell, but I think that booking the tickets independently and perhaps altering the route from Bergen to Flåm will be cheaper and probably feel slightly less touristy; hence the express boat from Bergen through the fjord.

We need ideas on a good place to get off the boat from Bergen... Accommodation is a big factor, as this trip is going to be really low-budget the way it is, and we can't really afford to blow 1500 NOK (~$200) on one hotel room. The only idea I have now is to stay at a campground in Balestrand. Perhaps there are other cheap accommodation options available somewhere in the fjord..?

We would also like to do something during our day trip, but I'm not sure what exactly my mother will be able to handle. Hiking and biking are definitely out of the question, but kayaking could work, so is there a good place to do this?

Summary:

Depart Bergen June 5th early morning
...
???
...
Arrive Flåm June 6th by 17:00

Thanks in advance for the help!!

Geoff -

I can offer you the following information. Depending on how strict your budget is you could consider the Balestrand Hotel. It's the number 1 rated trip advisor hotel (rec'd over Kvikne's). If the rates are still the same it's about 1000 NOK for a non-fjord view room. Still expensive but also cheaper than what you cited for a price.

We did a morning Kayak in Balestrand which was fantastic. The owner of Balestrand hotel set it up for us. That said if you wanted to try to do it solo his name was Ernst and I believe he works for Moreld. Really good guy, provided instruction, and told stories about the area etc as you went.

Geoff: this information is a bit "old",,,but in 1989 i took the "Norway in a nutshell" route. Had problems finding "budget" accomodations. However, i found Camping Flam. For singles like me, they had single-rooms available inside their main house and i believe they also had a few "cabins" like our historical log cabins. I also vaguely recall there was more than one campground around Flam. Hope this helps
