Do I need to bring a power converter and other paraphenalia to the UK this summer or do most lodging establishments have this covered for US visitors?
If your electronics are set up for world operation (virtually all modern laptops, cameras, phone chargers, etc. are), all you need is plug adapters to be able to plug into the UK sockets. Check the input of each device to make sure it says something like 110-240v. Lodging establishments do not have this "covered for US visitors" any more than they cover it for mainland Europe or Asian visitors. You need an adapter that works in the UK sockets (different from Europe).
Some big chain hotels (eg Marriott) may well have a socket or two for American-style plugs or loan out adaptors - but not something to be counted upon. It isn' t that difficult to pick up adaptors on the high street for American to UK sockets (eg at Wilkinson) but that isn't something you'd want to do on your first day I would have thought, so equip yourself in advance. Really anything that isn't dual voltage (ie can be run on 230V / 50Hz) I would leave at home.
Just click on "travel store" above, go to the accessories section, and for a buck you can order the adapter you need.
Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Radio Shack and at the electronics store in the airport. Buy a power plug to convert their sockets to US. If you have several electrical items, you might want to take a power strip and just plug it into the socket converter. That way you only need 2. One to use and one for just in case.
Ron, Most Hotels and other accommodations DO NOT offer 115 VAC outlets, although occasionally you may find one that has a limited-power Shaver outlet in the bathroom. The first thing you'll need to do is check EACH DEVICE that you'll be travelling with to determine the "Input Voltage" specifications. If these state Input Voltage 100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz, then all you'll need is inexpensive Plug Adapters. This is the type used in the U.K. Note this is the model for "Ungrounded" devices. Another type is used if the device requires a "Grounded" connection. If you're going to be travelling in continental Europe, another style of Plug Adapter is used. Some outlets in the U.K. are controlled by a small switch, which is usually right beside the outlet. Be sure to check that when you connect appliances. I would NOT recommend taking a Power Bar, as some of these have Surge Protection or other built-in electronic circuits, which are NOT designed to operate on 230 VAC electrical systems. Happy travels!
Thank you all. The only device I plan to bring is a Motorola Xoom tablet which, as you would expect, is multi-voltage compatible. Just ordered a simple UK plug converter from Amazon.com similar to the one on this site, but without the $6 shipping charge!
