Pub age?

I just read in a travel book that kids under 14 aren't allowed in pubs in GB unless it is in the dining room. Don't remember that from previous trips but wasn't travelling with a child then. We're taking our 12 year old grandson in June. Has anyone heard this?

Not from personal kmowledge- i was of drinking age when I visited my first UK pub. per various knowledgeable looking web sites (not peoples opinions); children above 14 are allowed in pubs, but cant drink alcoholic beverages until 18- criminal offense. Also apparaently pub owners can get variations in their licences restricting under- age people from entering pubs. One other site talks about kids being welcome in "pub gardens". Now lets see what actual Brits can tell us

Kids are allowed in most pubs now. You may find the odd one which doesn't allow them, but generally you should be fine. Some ask that children leave by, for example, 8 in the evening. Even here the aim is to remove smaller children. A 12 year old sitting with adults is unlikely to have any problem. Cheers! Alan

Kids are generally allowed in pubs, some of the chain family pubs even have kids play areas etc. Bit like restauarants, some want kids, some don't. Legal drinking age is 16 when drinking with a meal, 18 years otherwise just drink alone.

Thanks for the advice. We want him to be able to experience what pubs are like and have a couple meals at them. Sounds like we should be okay.

We went to the UK when our girls were young and they always went into the pubs with us. They loved it!!! We even stayed at a few pubs that had B&B rooms. Fun!!!!

As a general rule in the UK children are allowed in pubs up to 11:30pm. BUT it can also be up to the individual landlord if he wants them in at all, and some others want them out by 5 or 5:30p. We were traveling with several young children just last week and this is the information I got from my new "local" in Southwark. I don't make this stuff up...this is what he told me.

I agree with the above, but would say EI was in London with a small child and we got turned away from a couple of pubs. It is at the Landlord's discretion, and so you shouldn't be surprised if you are turned away.
