I'm finding it difficult to book two rooms for 1 person each for a late May/early June trip. (My travel companion and I definitely can't share a room.) We're willing to pay whatever supplements, but I'm finding I'm not getting responses to e-mails. Any thoughts or recommendations? Thank you
Try calling a few. People don't always answer email. I don't think B&B's care if there are one or two people in the room, as long as they get paid. I suspect, too, that they cannot legally refuse to rent rooms to one person. Maybe an Irish reader can chip in on that.
There are many, many B&Bs in Ireland. Try one more email. If that still doesn't work, just call them. I'm doubtful that they are failing to respond because you want a room for a single person. Word your request somethng like this: I would like to inquire about two (2) rooms ensuite for arrival 20 May and departing 23 May, 2011. We have noticed your fine review in the Rick Steves Guide. It will be our first visit to Ireland so we appreciate your efforts to assist us. Please advise us about your availability and costs for those dates and your requirements to book the rooms. Thank you, Sherry Doe and Jane Doe, Anywhere, Anywhere. I think that they will be enthusiastic to get your business. If this doesn't work, cross check the B&B on tripadvisor.com to see feedback from other travelers.
I have traveled in Ireland solo and never had a problem finding a room, even without booking ahead. I'm sure you will be able to find something, though it might be more difficult in June. B&Bs have all kinds of room configurations.
I've had this problem in Scotland in the high season July so I am not surprised that you've run into it in Ireland. I would call. Sometimes B&B's are reluctant to sell doubles as singles. But if you talk with them you can get the room. Be persistent. I think you're wise to book ahead, since you are searching for two singles in one place. In Scotland I would recommend looking at small family hotels as well as B&B's as another options. Pam
Are hostels an option?
Michael, regarding hostels, they would definitely be an option. The ones I've checked so far don't seem to have a phone number or e-mail address listed for inquiries... just a place to book. And when I've used that, they've assigned dormitory beds, rather than rooms. I'd welcome any suggestions. Thanks
If both of you are willing to pay for a double, make sure the B&B understands that. I'll second the suggestion to look at smaller hotels. Often, the difference is invisible.
