Private or small group tours in London

We are interested in either hiring a private tour guide in London or using a company which hosts small tour groups. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks.

have you looked at London Walks website? Walks.com. I have done some of their walks (and some of their Explorer Days). Recently done their British Museum tour and V&A museum tour. Numbers were about 12-14. I especially enjoyed the V&A tour with Margaret as guide. I know some of their group sizes can by large, but on the Westminster abbey tour they do split the group if it is too large and add a guide. To be able to help you can you give us more details of how many of you there are, ages etc, what your interests are, where you want to take tours etc

There are only two of us, mid 30's. We are just in the beginning stages of our planning, so we do not have specific sights/tours planned yet. We will pretty much want to see the major "must-see sights" and then some. While on our honeymoon in Italy, we experienced a priate tour guide, a small group (8 people) and a large group tour (about 40 people) and without a doubt, the large group tour is not for us. We enjoy the private and small group so much better and got so much more out of it.

We have always used Gray Line day tours, They are a great compnay. You can book the tours on-line here in the U.S. We have used them in London three different years, Canada, Australia, Paris, Bruges, Rome, Boston, New York, etc. They have you meet the tours at the Victoria Station or they pick you up near your hotel. Hi Kristi, in Florence's post I also suggested Even Evans tours. They have a website so taking a look at that might help in your planning. In hindsight, I don't know if I'd take the London tour again, it's easy enough with a good map (as long as I'm plugging things, I like the Streetwise maps, available thru Amazon) to get around on the tube. Having the guides' commentary was nice though. I would definitely do the Oxford/Warwick or Windsor tour again, although Windsor is a lot closer to London than I thought it would be, so that would be relatively easy to do on your own. I think they also have Leeds castle, Bath, Stonehenge and other tours if you want to do a day trip.
