My Husband & I will be staying in London as tourists from May 28-June 4. We are considering the following: County Hall, Victoria, Kennsington (Earl's Court) or Tower Hill. Of course, we'd consider othert suggestions. Is it necessary to have AC at that time of year? Should we book with breakfast?
Of these three, County Hall would be my first choice. It is a fabulous location for a tourist. You are right next to the London Eye, directly across from the Houses of Parliament, and an easy walk to many tourist sites. There is a lovely pedestrian walk along the South Bank and you can also easily walk up to the Tate Modern, the Globe, or Borough Market. My second choice would be Earl's Court, but it would be a very distant second to County Hall.
You probably won't need AC at that time.
Breakfast really depends on what you like. I'm a coffee and yogurt person so I usually don't eat at the hotel. There are a lot of coffee shops in London (e.g. Starbucks and similar places like EAT, Pret a Manger, Costa Coffee, etc) if you just want something light.
I cannot comment on the three Premier Inns mentioned. My only experience with them was in 2006 looking for a place to stay near Heathrow the night before a flight home. It was wonderful: convenient, large room, clean, bright, beautiful lobby, and inexpensive. I was so impressed, I looked for them on the continent, only to find that they are primarily in the UK.
I've stayed at the Premier inn at Gatwick north a couple of times, and it was really nice. And you can walk to the Terminal.
Hi Linda, We have stayed at County Hall many times and have always found it comfortable ane convenient. I think breakfast is a little pricey and they used to offer a choice of a full breakfast or continental but no more. We did find a great cafe within walking distance on the other side of Waterloo Station. It is small and dreary but if you want a HAOAP this is for you. BTW I try to stear clear of American Chains because, well just because.
Thanks for all your suggestions. At this time,we are planning to stay at the Premier County Hall and will probably have breakfast elsewhere.
I have stayed at the County Hall twice and just last September at the King's Cross Premier Inn. I like them both. This last time for the first time I got their all you can eat English Breakfast buffet, and I was very happy with it. The food was pretty good and I liked being able to have a good breakfast in a leisurely way before leaving the hotel -- I was ready for the day and didn't have to hunt down another place for breakfast. I know there are some nice cafes near the County Hall though, and these may suit you.
We too stayed at the Premier Inn at King's Cross. We were there two days prior to our switch to the Hilton (on points of course). We chose that particular hotel because is was within 1 block of the King's Cross tube station and 2 blocks from the British Library which was on our agenda. Not very far from the British Museum which was also on our list. For neighborhoods and ambiance, Kensington might be better.
The Earls Ct location on Cromwell rd in Kensington is a great location. I always stay at the adjacent Easyhotel. There is a full size Tesco grocer 5 minutes up the street and Earls ct road has tons of shops and starbucks, post office, etc as well as the Earls Ct tube station. It is my favorite area to stay in as it isnt over-flowing with tourists like the Victoria area, etc.
Kensington High Street is also within walking distance.
I feel safe walking around the area even alone at night. Lots of pubs and restaurants.
My son and I stayed at County Hall May 26th through May 31st last summer. Our first day in London, it was rainy and windy. Absolutely freezing!. We did book with breakfast for two reasons. Traveling with a teenage son, I thought the buffet style breakfast would give me a chance to fill him up before setting out to visit the sites. Secondly, I didn't want to search for a place to eat in an unfamiliar city each morning. For us, it worked well. Location of County Hall is great. Right around the corner is Waterloo station. Easy for the day trips to Windsor and Hampton Court. We purchased our travelcards at Waterloo in order to get 2 for 1 discounts.
