Power Converters or Adapters for London?

I'm going to London this month, and I know I'll need adapters for my phone charger and camera charger, but I wasn't sure which (or both) I would need for my flat iron. This is what my flat iron says on it: 120 VAC 60Hz 170W If anyone could let me know which I'll need, that would be great!

Just to make sure...I will only need an adapter if I have a dual voltage chalkflat iron?

Victoria, You will most definitely need Plug Adapters to connect your Chargers in London. If you're only going to be in the U.K., you'll need the style shown on THIS website. Note that the outlets are often controlled by a switch as well. If you'll be travelling on the continent, a different style of Plug Adapter will be required. I'd suggest packing at least two, as they're easy to misplace. I assume you've checked the Input Voltage specifications for your phone and Camera Chargers, to ensure they're designed to operate from 100-240 VAC? One other point to mention is that your phone may or may not work in Europe, depending on which network you're with in the U.S. and which model phone you're using. Your Flat Iron will definitely NOT work in Europe without a Voltage Converter. I would highly recommend checking the owner's manual for the Flat Iron, as some manufacturers specifically prohibit use of their products with Voltage Converters. I know that as I checked with the technical support department of one of the most popular brands. In this case, I would suggest either..... > Buy a Flat Iron when you arrive in the U.K. Your Hotel should be able to provide directions to the nearest Boots or other shop. > Pack along a dual-voltage Flat Iron such as this model from Magellans. Happy travels!

Victoria, Thanks for the additional information. As you're going to France, you will also need the Euro-style Plug Adapters with two round pins. Again, I'd suggest packing along at least two. The dual-voltage Flat Iron offered by Magellan's as shown in my previous reply is most likely fitted with a North American plug. Therefore you'll need one style of Plug Adapter to use it in the U.K. and the other style to use it in France. That particular Flat Iron includes a selektion of the most popular Plug Adapters, but I'd still pack along a few extra. If you were to buy a Flat Iron in London, it would be fitted with a U.K.-style Plug, which means you would still need a Plug Adapter to use it in France. The simplest solution is probably to go with a dual-voltage model, as that way you'd have it immediately available, and wouldn't have to go out and find one. Magellan's also offers a good choice of cheap Plug Adapters. You can probably find similar products at your local Radio Shack or travel stores, but they'll likely be more expensive than Magellans (they have the Euro-style non-grounded Plug Adapters at $2.85, which is about the cheapest I've seen). I've been using them for years, and they've worked well. There are lots of "all-in-one" Plug Adapters available these days that fit a variety of plug styles, but I find them "clumsy & finicky" and therefore won't use them. I like the "cheap & simple" approach. Cheers!

Plug adapters - you will need both the UK style and the Euro style, one for England, one for France.

"Just to make sure...I will only need an adapter if I have a dual voltage chalkflat iron?" Yes. Look at the "brick" (the transformer on the power cord) of any device you are planning to take to Europe. If it says "100-240 volts" and "50-60 Hz," all you need is the appropriate plug adapter. For two prong devices, the British Isles use one kind and Continental Europe uses another. For three prong devices, there are several different kinds used on the Continent: here's a comprehensive list http://tinyurl.com/32g3xtt. So, if you're bringing a three prong device (like many laptops), get the right one for France. If your device only has voltage input below 200, and/or only has 60 Hz (like your flat iron), it won't work in Europe without a converter. And, as Ken said, it may not work even with a converter, and with a converter it probably won't work well. So, follow his advice, and get a new device, either a multi-voltage one bought here, or a local one bought in Europe (there are various reports here that the latter option works better, particularly for hair dryers; the multi-voltage ones don't get as hot). Rick is having a sale on plug adapters: http://tinyurl.com/4dd4h. Of the two in the picture, the top one is for UK and Ireland, and the bottom one is for France.
