Has anyone been to Plymouth, England? We may take the ferry across from Brittany France and go to Plymouth and work our way to London over a few days. Any ideas about things to see and places to stay? We just wanted to do something out of the norm of riding the chunnel straight to London and to see other places along the way.
Plymouth is a very nice little town. One of the things to do there is go to Smeaton's Tower on Plymouth Hoe. It's Plymouth lighthouse. It used to be out at the sea but was moved on the hoe (stone by stone!). From there you can enjoy a really nice view over Dartmoor, Devon and Cornwall. There are exhibitions at Plymouth Dome and of course Plymouth is also the port where the Mayflower departed from so a stroll at the Mayflower Steps is a must.
Thanks Rudy for the information-we will do that!

I live near to Stonehenge in Wiltshire and my wife and I love Cornwall! One place you must go to in Plymouth is around the Barbican which is the oldest part of Plymouth.
If you are driving you can also take a chain driven car ferry (Torpoint - Devonport) across the Sound and take the road down to Looe.
You can also get a First Great Western train direct from Plymouth to London, then link with Eurostar. You can also get combined tickets on the Eurostar web site which includes any tube fares across London from Paddington to St Pancras.

Thanks Paul for the information. I'll check into Cornwall and the other travel arrangements.
