I would love hear your recommendations as there are so many hostels to chose from. We are in our late 20's-mid 30's with no kids but don't need to be right in the downtown as I hear the buses are great in Dublin. We are also not trying to spend to much on where we sleep as we won't be there much. Some things I would like to know are: Are the floors ultra creaky? Is the breakfast more than piece of toast? Was there a place to store luggage - safely? And anything else you'd like to share. Thank you for your recommedations.
I heartily endorse the Globetrotters Hostel. It's not the cheapest hostel in Dublin, but it's centrally-located, very clean, secure, and offers safe luggage storage. Best of all, guests get an absolutely fabulous full Irish breakfast. It's more than enough to allow you to skip lunch and save money accordingly.
just returned last night from Dublin. Stayed one night at Avalon House. Older, our 4 person ensuite room was small, but quiet. They had a hot meal, but we didnh't eat there. It's about 8 blocks from central area. Stayed 2 nights at Jacobs Inn right next to bus station. Had a 4 person ensuite with large bathroom - modern - but really loud talking outside both nights so our sleep was broken - ear plugs would probably do the trick. Only toast and juices but lots of that. Saw lots of other hostels as we walked around.
I would also second Globetrotters Hostel. I stayed there for 7 nights total (6 in June and 1 in July). It kind of depends on your room about the floors. My first room did not have creaky floors, my second one they were a tad creaky but not enough to keep me up at night or anything. The luggage storage also depends - there is a kept luggage room which seemed pretty safe if you are checking in early/late. They will also store things for you behind the desk like your laptop or any other valuables. Room wise however it depends. My first room had storage bins under each bed that you could lock, but my second room did not. You could maybe ask for a room with those if you were worried. You had to buzz to get into the hostel and then show your keycard so the hostel itself was very safe. The breakfast is the highlight of the hostel - it is eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, fruit cups, cereal, oatmeal, hashbrowns, juice, coffee...umm and a bit more but I've forgotten! There is also two computers with free internet which is handy. It is about two blocks from the bus station which is very handy, and about 3 blocks to O'Connell street which is the main street so good location.
I'm thirding the recommendation for Globetrotters! I spent 4 nights there this past March; the location was great - I loved the pedestrian only streets nearby and I felt very safe walking back alone at night. As for creakyness, my bed was right next to the door, which was near the stairs and I could hear people dragging their suitcases down the stairs. The breakfast was fantastic! I especially loved the free use of the computers, and used it to keep in touch with friends and family.
