I'm looking for a one night accomodation for me and my mother-in-law at the beginning of April. The Shakespeare Mercure Hotel looked like a good fit, but it isn't getting good reviews for cleanliness on Trip Advisor. Any suggestions for a great place to stay? Thanks!
I don't know if you are driving, but there is an amazing b and b about a mile south of Stratford-upon Avon on the Shipston road, called Monk's Barn Farm. It is run by Mrs Meadows. The rooms are almost all ensuite, very comfortable beds, great English breakfast, and sheep and lambs outside the windows! The price is reasonable for the area, and somewhat less than right in town. I would never stay anywhere else in the area unless Monk's Barn is booked.
Oh my gosh, the Emsley Guest House was just fantastic. It was very reasonably priced, breakfast was great, location was great, owners were great. Can't recommend it highly enough.
While you are in Stratford-upon-Avon you should make sure you get to see the long lost painting of Shakespeare that was just discovered.

The Shakespeare is in a great location and I had no problems with cleanliness. It's not a luxury hotel by any stretch and it depending on your rate may not be worth it. But at least for me I wouldn't be put off by cleanliness.
I really liked my stay at 'The Stratford' (formerly called the 'Stratford Victoria'). It's a modern, classy hotel with large rooms and all the amenities at a reasonable price. The food was really good too. I see it's number 4 of 82 on the Trip Advisor hit parade, so that should be more comforting to you.
I haven't stayed there yet but am staying at Quilt and Croissants - a B and B that seems close to the theatre. It is only 55 pounds a night and looks fine. If anyone has stayed there, tell me what you think.
Michelle, try looking on Tripadvisor for hotels and B and Bs in Stratford. I find that its great for weeding through choices.
We have stayed at The Shakespear before and loved it. The atmosphere of being in a building that was an inn in Shakespear's time is wonderful. They have kept many of the origial features. The room was immaculate, too.
Arden Park Guest House -- I stayed there last fall. It's pretty and well-kept, has a good breakfast, very helpful staff, and a convenient location. It's an easy walk to the train station, Shakespeare's birthplace, and the Courtyard Theatre.
We stayed at Caterham House several years ago and liked it. Good parking and walking distance to the theatre.
The Ambleside Guest House is a good bet, as well. I stayed there last month, and it is clean, very well located, good breakfast, quiet, and competitively priced. They have free parking for guests, which is a good thing in Stratford, and are convenient to the train station.
Thank you all for your informative replies. Your expertise really helped me sort through my choices. After some more research and looking at availability, I booked the Adelphi Guesthouse for our trip. Thanks so much!
