Hi, My 13 year old son and I are going on a boy's vacation and are picking up my wife's new Volvo in Gothenberg. We have a week (up to 9 days). We are thinking maybe London or Rome for a few days and then tour around Norway and Sweden (by train). Don't plan to drive the car much if any. Any suggestions? Going first part of April...
A trip with your son will be very special. Your comments sound like you really don't have a particular destination in mind. First off: where will you be flying in/out of? If you haven't bought the tickets yet, consider flying "open jaw" into whatever city is nearest the area you want to start exploring. Then fly home from the city nearest where you will be dropping off the car for shipping. Where does your son want to go? You could start there for itinerary ideas. Check weather averages for the time you will be in Sweden or Norway. April may still be very cold or snowy for good travel experiences. From your alloted trip time (not including flying days there and home) subtract the time it will take for the car logistics, then decide how much time you want to spend traveling from place to place vs. exploring a place, and you will know about how far apart and how many places you want to visit. With a week to 9 days you don't really have that much time for enjoyably seeing more than 1 - 3 cities/areas. My suggestion: fly into London, Rome, or Paris - any one of these would be good for a short visit with plenty to see. Use your chosen city as a home base from which to explore the surrounding region, as well. Then travel by train or plane to get to the car. Getting your son involved in the planning from the beginning will make it even more memorable for you both.
