Ok... have my flight reservations, car rental, B&B's booked, tour planned... now need to know about phoning in Ireland.... Last time I was in Europe was about 13 years ago and at that time we easily purchased phone cards and used land phones (pay phones on the street and in hotels) to call the US. Is that still possible to do or should I rent a cell phone that I could use in Ireland to call people back home in the US? Anybody have any suggestions as to from whom I can rent a cellphone for a reasonable price? Someone recommended cellhire.com????
Hi Monica,
I think it might depend how long you are planning to go for. For instance, I actaully "bought" a cell phone when I was there. I saw "bought" because the phone was free, I just had to put 50 Euro credit on it. However, I was there for 2 months. I liked it because people could call me from home (Canada) and it would be free for me. If you aren't going for very long, I also had a phone card and had no problems using that on pay phones or in the hostels I stayed at.
We used Vonage a lot from Europe. Worked quite well. We also had an unlocked phone, and SIM cards are -every-where. The free incoming calls was nice - just have the state side folks call you back.
I'd recommend purchasing an unlocked phone, or seeing if yours can be unlocked.
