Perth?

I am thinking of breaking up a rather long train trip from Inverness to London in June with a stop in Perth. From what I read, it sounds charming, but I will have to limit myself to things in town as I won't have a car. What do you think?

I visited briefly once, but didn't see that much that I wanted to see. I have stayed in Dunkeld, which is just a stop or two earlier. I would recommend Dunkeld if you are interested in Scottish music. It's a much smaller town--more of a village. But it has this great pub for music. http://www.thetaybank.co.uk/ If you go to Perth, look for the Fair Maid of Perth's house. ; ) You might want to pick up Sir Walter Scott's novel too. Pam

I spent part of a day in Perth last year..... it's an 'okay' city but I wouldn't call it charming.

Thanks for the replies. I've spent quite a bit of time in Edinburgh and Stirling as well, just looking for someplace I haven't been. The church in Perth, Church of St. John seemed worth a visit, but I'm open to another train stop along the route.

It's a little further north, but Pitlochry is another option. I would still vote for Dunkeld. Of course, you could go as far south as York or Durham. Both would make nice breaks. Pam

I'm actually staying 4 nights in York and Durham on the way up. I will start in Norwich for a family history tour and make my way eventually to the Orkneys. I thought, therefore to make a 'viking' theme of this trip. I wonder what it is about Perth that seems to put people off? AS I said, the only thing I know about it is that it has some interesting history and is on the rail line.
