Personal tour guide

We are thinking about taking a trip to Great Britain in the spring or fall, and seeing London up to Scotland. Could you give me a timeline, and do you think a personal tour guide (we are going to use a car) would give us the most bang for our buck (off the beaten path). Thanks

I would suggest getting the Rough Guide Scotland, the Rough Guide England and a good road map, and doing this yourselves. If you have a car it would be easy.
