Perhaps I'm being obtuse but... Tapas?

In reading all the guide books for Ireland, I see again and again the term "tapas menu". Again, perhaps I'm being obtuse but I always though "tapas" was a kind of food, not a style of dining. The books all seem to refer to it as a full-blown menu rather than a dish... Could you please help me fix this in my head?

I did some research on it but I was hoping to hear about it from someone who's experienced it.

Tapas bars/restaurants are very popular over this side of the Pond. The usual thing is to order a selection of dishes and share. It is not seen as snacks (as in Spain itself) but has morphed into a full dinner experience!

Here is the site for a Tapas restaurant we go to when we visit Manchester, click on the PDF download.

Looks like a nice menu. I saw a number of restaurants in Dublin have a tapas menu so this might be a nice, inexpensive way to dine...
